What to do During Layovers

June 26, 2015

Ahhh yes. The layover. The often dreaded span of time between connecting flights.

I don’t think anyone really knows what to do during layovers. The things is, I love airports. So I don’t mind a layover of an hour or two at all. But more than four hours can indeed start to get tedious and the airport lighting can start to sting. So here is a short ‘nd sweet guide to how to deal with layovers.

Under an hour
What are you doing looking at this guide?! Go catch your flight, they’re probably already boarding!

1-3 Hours
Figure out where you gate is and then peruse near-by shops. This is the perfect amount of time to grab a bite or a drink. Ooo, and you can try out one of those express mani-pedis.

4-6 Hours
Try to split your time between your arrival and departure terminals. A change of scenery will definitely make this large span of time a bit better. I’d suggest getting a sit-down meal (this can easily kill an hour) and fully charging all electronics (you definitely have time for it).

6-12 Hours
Get the hell outta there. While leaving the airport might be expensive (and take some time depending on where you are), I’d much rather spend two or four hours in a big city than the maze of airport halls. Visit a friend, have a meal, go see a sight. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to go through security again so time yourself accordingly.

12-24 Hours
Get the hell outta there. And book a hotel if this includes an overnight. Airport hotels can be either really expensive or kinda gross so it’s probably worth it to book somewhere a bit further away. It’s totally up to you if you want to crash or enjoy the non-airport air.

24+ Hours
Does that even count as a layover?

So there you have it; a quick guide to layovers. Do you have any funny (or traumatising) layover stories?
